How to Be Creative Again (Even When You Feel Totally Burned Out)
Do you ever feel uninspired? Some days we are full of great ideas, and others… 💧The creative well is bone dry. 🦴
Today I’m exploring what it feels like to experience creative burnout and WHY it happens.
When you think of “creativity,” you might think of a painter, a musician… or an artist of some kind.
But creativity is simply your ability to unblock your own unique life force.
The force of nature that lights you up 💡 and makes you, you… 🫵.
When you’re feeling uninspired, that force is suffocated. 😰
It’s bogged down by a bunch of B.S. about who and what you “should” say and be.
The norms you “need to follow” in order to succeed. Stuff that’s been programmed into us by society.
So why do we get bored with life, projects, work, and relationships?
It’s because, like a plant, our creativity is dying in a room with no water or sun.
It’s starving for what feeds it. And most of us don’t even know that our creative force needs food.
We’re literally starving artists. Not for money or food, but for inspiration. 🖌️
So why does our creativity seem to dry up? Here’s 3 big reasons.
1. Doing the same thing every day (same views, same people, same habits).
According to neuroscience, doing the same thing every day literally SHRINKS 🧠 your brain.
Think about it… a lot of our daily habits are the same!
Our 🌅 morning routines, workdays , and even evenings!
Sounds scary, right?
When we do something over and over again 🔁, our brain creates a shortcut that makes it easier over time, literally requiring LESS thought.
That’s why that guy in the video can stack cups so fast! 💨 He did it so many times that he doesn’t need to think any more.
His brain is not expanding from doing the task any more!
So what can we do to excite our brain, make us smarter, and boost creativity?
- Take this easy Class on Neuroplasticity on Udemy that will teach you how grow your brain!
- Try something new with your free time this weekend!
- Change up your morning routine 🌞 with something super simple!
- Try a new kind of breakfast, brush your teeth with the opposite hand, or go for a walk outside!
2. You’re Taking Things Too Seriously (and Forgetting to Have Fun)
All work and no play? It’s a creativity killer!
Yes, being a working adult or parent means doing things that aren’t always fun… 😔
But if everything feels heavy, your brain can’t play. And creativity needs play!
Having a lighter attitude can simply mean:
- Treating tasks and conversations with a sense of fun 😄, like it’s play… not just work.
When someone is rude, taking a deep breath and choosing not to carry it with you. 😮💨
- Realizing we don’t have to control everything, and learning to let go a little. Learn Buddhist Non-Attachment
So next time someone says you’re just being lazy or having too much fun, just remember: You’re also innovating!😉
Rest, movement, joy, human connection, and new experiences reset your brain and create the space where real breakthroughs happen.
Bringing a lighter attitude to your day helps:
Reduce stress ⬇️
Build stamina for tough tasks 💪
Boost serotonin 🧠 (your feel-good brain chemical)
Unlock better ideas by helping you let go and laugh a little
The more you enjoy the process, the more creative, and effective, you become.
Creativity isn’t just about “art” …like painting or writing music.
Creativity shows up in scientific breakthroughs 🧪, business strategy, mathematical insight… or anywhere new ideas are needed.
So here’s one more reason you’re feeling uninspired 🥱 and how you can tackle it!
3. You’re not sleeping enough! 🥱
We often picture passionate people staying up all night, completely absorbed in their creative work.
And this might work for a one-off situation, when you’re already well-rested ahead of time. 💤
But this actually leads to burnout and brain dysfunction. 😩
Studies have shown that even moderate sleep deprivation can significantly hinder creative performance. 😵
That’s why so many high-achievers and celebrities end up using drugs 💊 to stay awake or go to sleep.
At first, their work is amazing 🤩 and sometimes gets even better during those intense periods.
But after a while, it leads to burnout, addiction, and eventually a crash… creatively, emotionally, or both.
Even coffee ☕ can perpetuate us to force our body to be awake when it actually needs sleep! 🛌
Why Creativity Is the Key to Deeper Connections and a More Successful Business
Your creativity is an essential part of communication 🗣️ and your ability to connect with others.
Interacting with humans is the core of everything that we do, whether it be online or in-person.
The deeper I researched about human communication…
The more I realized how much our creativity gets choked by the desire to fit in, be approved of, and automate our messages with AI.
And that bottleneck is making us look the same. Even when we think we look different.
The relationship building and appeal all comes down to trustworthy human connections.
And it also comes down to how we can stand out as real… because most people are wearing masks.
Even our writing has masks now, because we’re running it through an AI filter.
So what’s the solution to this?
Today, I spent about 15 minutes with The Artists Way by Julia Cameron, and it reminded me exactly why I’ve been having a creative block.
When I followed its tips, I literally went from falling asleep at my desk to punching out this entire blog post in 30 minutes.
The creative life force came flowing straight through me!
And all it took was for me to start creating from my heart.
Without a filter. Without rules. Without “realistic boundaries.”
If you’re feeling bored with what you’re currently doing and stuck in your business, I want you to stop… unless your livelihood is critically dependent on that task.
If so, find a way to outsource it and do something that matters to you.
Because when you finally give yourself the freedom to let that go, you’ll be able to get back the pure gold that’s inside…
The one that helps you make actual progress!
Why This Really Matters
Real creativity isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s not “getting outsourced by AI.”
It’s what brings our work, our relationships, and our ideas to life.
When we ignore it, everything starts to feel dull.
But when we listen to it, even for 15 minutes, it can change everything.
